How to Compare Insurance Quotes Apples to Apples in Minnesota

Choose Your Insurance With Confidence, Not Just a Lower Quote.

Two insurance quotes can look similar on the first page and respond very differently after a loss. One may include an endorsement the other leaves out. Another may have a higher deductible or a different way of valuing damaged property. The price difference becomes useful only after you understand those differences.

For Minnesota households comparing home, renters, or auto insurance, a simple side-by-side review can make the decision easier. Start with what you want protected, make the assumptions consistent, and ask for explanations in writing when an important detail is unclear.

Give each company the same starting information

Gather your current declarations pages, which summarize the policy period, insured property, limits, and deductibles. Keep the full policy and endorsements available too. A summary is a useful starting point, but it does not contain every condition or exclusion.

Write down the same household and property information for every quote request. For auto insurance, that includes the vehicles, drivers, garaging location, and actual use. For home insurance, check the address, construction details, roof information, square footage, and any renovations. Correct an old assumption rather than carrying it into every new quote.

Tell each agent what you are trying to accomplish. Perhaps you want to understand a renewal increase, account for a new driver, or find out whether a larger deductible makes sense. A clear goal helps keep the conversation focused without assuming that changing companies is the only useful outcome.

Compare the protection before comparing the premium

Match liability limits and the major property coverage limits as closely as possible. Then look below those numbers. On a home quote, compare how the dwelling, roof, and belongings would be valued after a covered loss. On an auto quote, check whether both proposals include the same optional coverages, such as collision, comprehensive, or rental reimbursement.

The NAIC recommends requesting revised quotes when coverage and limits do not match. That prevents a cheaper, narrower proposal from being mistaken for the same protection at a lower price.

Next, identify exclusions, special limits, and endorsements. Minnesota Commerce highlights possible home insurance gaps involving sump pumps, detached structures, valuables, and home businesses in its homeowner insurance guidance. Ask which of those situations matters to your household and where the answer appears in each proposal.

A useful comparison note explains the practical difference: “This option includes water-backup coverage; this one does not.” If the descriptions are confusing, ask how both policies would address the same situation, without treating that discussion as a promise about a future claim.

Check your total cost and your share of a loss

Compare premiums for the same length of time. A monthly amount is not directly comparable to a six-month or annual total. Ask about installment charges, down payments, and the conditions behind discounts. A price that assumes multiple policies or a particular payment method needs to be evaluated on that basis.

Review every deductible separately. A home policy may have a different deductible for certain losses. If one is expressed as a percentage, ask what amount the percentage applies to and request the resulting dollar figure. For auto insurance, confirm the comprehensive and collision deductibles rather than assuming they match.

Consider whether you could comfortably pay that amount after a loss. A premium reduction can be worthwhile, but only if the added out-of-pocket responsibility is deliberate. The NAIC auto insurance shopping tool offers a structured way to organize coverage and cost questions.

Finally, ask whether the quote is preliminary, what information remains subject to verification, and what must happen for coverage to take effect. Do not cancel an existing policy until the replacement coverage and its effective date are confirmed.

Use a short decision checklist

  • Confirm that names, addresses, vehicles, drivers, and property details are accurate.
  • Match policy periods, coverage limits, and major optional coverages.
  • Compare settlement methods, exclusions, special limits, and endorsements.
  • Translate each deductible into an understandable out-of-pocket amount.
  • Record the total premium, payment charges, and discount requirements.
  • Confirm who will answer service questions and how to report a claim.

You do not need to choose the lowest quote automatically. You need to understand what you gain, what you give up, and which costs you are comfortable keeping yourself. Save the comparison so the reason for your decision is clear at the next review.

If you would like a second set of eyes, consider asking David Olson at Intrinsic Insurance to walk through the differences with you. Bring the complete proposals and your questions, and take the time you need to decide.

This is general education, not a coverage determination. Quotes, eligibility, policy terms, and available options vary by insurer and household.
