Rideshare and Delivery Insurance in Minnesota: Check the Gaps Before Logging On

Using your car to earn extra income can start with a simple step: opening an app. The insurance implications are less simple. Your vehicle may move between personal driving, waiting for an assignment, traveling to a pickup, and completing a paid trip. The relevant coverage can change during those transitions.

Before accepting the first ride or delivery, make a plan for each stage. The goal is not merely to upload an insurance card that satisfies the platform. It is to understand who could pay for injuries, damage to other people’s property, and damage to the car you rely on.

Map the work instead of relying on one label

Write down which services you intend to use and what you will transport. Passenger rides, restaurant deliveries, grocery orders, packages, and driving for a local business are not interchangeable insurance activities. Tell the insurer about all of them, including part-time work and use of multiple apps.

Minnesota’s transportation network company insurance statute distinguishes the period when a rideshare driver is logged on and available from periods after accepting a ride and while transporting a rider. It requires insurance that recognizes the activity and permits personal auto insurers to exclude specified rideshare use.

Those passenger-rideshare provisions should not be treated as a blanket description of food or package delivery insurance. Ask separate questions for each service. A policy endorsement described casually as “rideshare coverage” may have eligibility rules that do not match every kind of paid driving you do.

Create a short timeline for a typical shift. At each stage, identify the policy, coverage type, limit, deductible, and claim contact. An unanswered space is a question to resolve before work starts.

Separate liability from protection for your own car

Platform liability coverage generally concerns harm to other people or their property. It should not be confused with collision or comprehensive coverage for your vehicle. If the car is damaged and cannot be used, the fact that a platform maintains a large liability limit does not answer who will repair it.

For example, DoorDash’s insurance information explains that its third-party auto liability protection does not cover damage to a Dasher’s own vehicle. Its guidance also warns that personal-policy restrictions can leave vehicle-damage gaps. This is an example of why platform-specific terms matter, not a statement that every delivery company uses the same arrangement.

Ask whether any physical damage protection is contingent on maintaining collision and comprehensive on your personal policy. Review the deductible and whether rental costs or lost earnings are addressed. Do not assume a policy paying for vehicle repairs also replaces the income you cannot earn while the car is in the shop.

Get the insurance answer before the first shift

The Minnesota Department of Commerce’s commercial auto guidance identifies ownership, drivers, and the way a vehicle is used as factors in choosing appropriate coverage. That makes an accurate description of your work more useful than asking only, “Am I covered for business use?”

Give the agent the platform names, expected mileage, delivery or passenger activity, and vehicle ownership details. Ask whether an endorsement, a different personal policy, or commercial auto coverage is appropriate and available. Request written confirmation of the selected coverage and effective date.

If you have an umbrella policy, include it in the review. Do not assume it fills a business-use exclusion in the auto policy. Also check any loan, lease, or rental agreement for restrictions on commercial or platform use.

After an accident, report the facts accurately to the relevant insurer and platform. Preserve timestamps, trip records, screenshots, photographs, and correspondence when available. Do not change your account of whether the app was on or an assignment had been accepted. Those details can be central to determining the applicable coverage.

Your paid-driving checklist

  • List every platform and type of paid driving you plan to perform.
  • Disclose the activity to your personal auto insurer before beginning.
  • Map coverage while offline, waiting, traveling to a pickup, and completing the assignment.
  • Verify protection for your own vehicle separately from third-party liability.
  • Record deductibles, claim instructions, and any conditions for platform coverage.
  • Confirm the coverage change is effective before relying on it.
